Go Wild for Spring Birds! Spring Field Ornithology Course on Birds and Habitat To practice what they’re learning, students take optional weekend field trips to birding hot spots led by experienced guides. In addition to Sapsucker Woods and other local birding hot spots, the class offers trips to Derby Hill on the southern end of Lake Ontario for hawk-watching and to Braddock Bay near Rochester for a session on bird banding. Day trips include visits to Derby Hill on the southern end of Lake Ontario to do a little hawk-watching and to Braddock Bay near Rochester. Overnight field trips are planned for the always-popular Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge at the north end of Cayuga Lake and the Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in New Jersey, with other stops in the Cape May area. The cost is $150 for lectures, $150 for the field trips, or $290 for both sections. An additional fee is required for the overnight trips. Call 607-254-2452 to sign up (outside Ithaca, 800-843-2473). Tangleworthy: Spring Encounter 10am-12pm Create woodland homes for fairies and elves along the Children's Trail. These homes, crafted from an assortment of natural materials including clay and wildflowers, welcome spring. A picnic, parade, tour and visit from the Woodlands Princess complete the day's festivities. Artist LouAnne Heth-Carson emerges from the woods in costume to honor each child and sprinkle them with glitter, performing in silence. Tangleworthy: Summer Encounter 10am-12pm Workshop participants learn the history and traditions associated with labyrinths and practice drawing the maze pattern that is recreated in stone and sand in Gleason Meadow. The Web of Life Labyrinth remains intact due to human passage as native grasses rise.Various community groups adopt a week to experience and maintain the Labyrinth. Four community seminars promote city-wide project. The seminars provide the same workshop content off-site. A Walking Labyrinth created in chalk offers an opportunity to engage in the experience.
