Strong Commitment to Education

Education is a critical resource that sustains our future and greatly enhances the quality of life in any community. Chemung County's area schools represent an extensive educational system offering a combination of four public school systems (Elmira, Elmira Heights, Horseheads and Spencer-Van Etten) and several private and parochial schools, all providing the foundation for students entering the work force of continuing with their formal education. The Schuyler-Chemung-Tioga BOCES, a vocational education campus, and Corning Community College's Tech Prep work closely with local schools and businesses to design and administer school-to-work programs.

A wide range of educational options are available to students pursuing continued education. Corning Community College offers two-year degrees in serveral fields along with several nearby four-year institutions: Elmira College, Alfred University, Alfred State College, Cornell University, College Center of the Finger Lakes, Elmira Business Institute, Empire State College, Ithaca College, Keuka College and Mansfield University.

Chemung County's Steele Memorial Library system provides its patrons with access to 300,000 volumns, a computerized reference system and internet connections. The Steele system consists of an interlibrary loan network and provides Bookmobile service to residents in outlying areas who cannot travel to one of the library branches.
